How to Care for Ceramic Tea Ware

Simple, safe care for ceramic cups and teapots — washing, removing tea stains, dealing with crackle glaze, and storing pieces so they last.

Ceramic tea ware is low-maintenance, but a few simple habits keep it looking good for years. All HalkilnLeaf pieces are food-safe. We recommend hand-washing rather than the dishwasher, which protects the glaze, any hand-finished details, and crackle-glaze surfaces.

Everyday washing

  • Rinse with warm water and a soft sponge; mild dish soap is fine.
  • Avoid abrasive scourers and harsh scrubbing, which can dull glaze over time.
  • Let pieces air-dry or dry with a soft cloth before stacking.
  • Avoid sudden temperature shocks (e.g. very hot water into a cold-from-the-fridge piece).

Removing tea stains

Tea can leave a brown film inside cups and pots. To remove it gently: make a paste of baking soda and a little water, rub with a soft cloth or sponge, then rinse well. This is gentler than abrasive pads and safe for glazed surfaces. Repeat if needed rather than scrubbing hard once.

Crackle glaze and unglazed clay

Some pieces have a crackle glaze (fine surface lines) or partly unglazed clay. These can absorb tea over time and develop character — this is normal, not damage. Rinse them with water rather than soaking in strong detergent, and let them dry fully between uses.

Storing and handling

  • Don’t stack heavy pieces inside thin cups; chips usually start from knocks.
  • Use a cloth or shelf liner to cushion stacked pieces.
  • Handle by the body, not only the handle or rim, when a piece is full and hot.

Frequently asked questions

Can I put ceramic tea ware in the dishwasher?

We recommend hand-washing HalkilnLeaf pieces. Hand-washing protects the glaze, hand-finished details, and crackle-glaze surfaces, and reduces the risk of chips from movement in the machine.

How do I remove tea stains from a cup?

Make a paste of baking soda and a little water, rub gently with a soft cloth or sponge, then rinse. It’s safe for glazed surfaces and gentler than abrasive pads.

Is the crackle pattern a defect?

No. Crackle glaze is an intentional, traditional effect. The fine lines may deepen with use as they take on tea — that patina is part of the piece, not damage.

Are HalkilnLeaf ceramics food-safe?

Yes, all pieces are food-safe. We recommend hand-washing to keep them in the best condition.
